Dark Blue Ebonite
$150.00
One of the earliest materials for making fountain pens has be a material called Ebonite. It is arguably the best ever in terms of workability and durability, if not beauty. It is without question the favorite among antique pen collectors. Speaking strictly as a maker of pens, I would say it is a delight to machine but has a face only a mother could love. Ebonite is rubber, and rubber is not very high on the beauty scale. It comes in many colors and configurations, my favorite is black, and a quick internet search will produce a veritable cornucopia of rubber colors.
I accepted a challenge of sorts and built a pen from Ebonite. I have several blanks lying about and picked one with the most “life” to it. My favorite use of ebonite is for the nib sections of fountain pens. It has the perfect non-slip feel that immediately causes one to want to ink up and write a journal.
In the attached photos you will see that I have manipulated the brightness and vibrance to bring out the colors. The clip BYW is a spring treated bronze.
